Trial partners

Population Health Research Institute (PHRI)

The Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) is a globally recognised leader in clinical and population health research. Established in 1999, PHRI is a joint initiative between Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The institute’s mission is to advance global health through large-scale clinical trials and epidemiological studies that influence treatment strategies, policies, and public health interventions.

Global reach

Global reach: Operating in 100+ countries with a focus on scalable healthcare solutions.

PHRI conducts research in over 100 countries, addressing key health challenges. The international focus ensures that health improvements benefit populations worldwide, especially in low- and
middle-income regions. By leveraging global collaborations, PHRI delivers research outcomes that are culturally relevant, feasible, and implementable in a wide range of healthcare settings.

Shaping the future of global healthcare

Shaping the future
of global healthcare

PHRI’s contribution to global health through its
world-class research and collaborations, including the REVIVE clinical trial, is pivotal in advancing healthcare solutions that are effective, scalable, and accessible.

Their innovative approach to tackling some of the world’s most pressing health challenges makes them an invaluable partner in the pursuit of better health outcomes for populations across the globe.

Research areas

Research areas:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Chronic disease prevention and management
  • Infectious diseases (including HIV, TB, and malaria)

Cardiovascular health: A pioneer in cardiovascular research, PHRI has led some of the world’s largest and most impactful trials in the field. These studies have resulted in significant advancements in understanding heart disease, stroke, peripheral artery disease, and other vascular conditions, influencing clinical practice globally.

Global health and equity: PHRI places a strong emphasis on improving health in under-resourced regions, conducting trials that address health inequities.
The institute’s research initiatives are designed to offer practical, scalable solutions to improve health outcomes in both high- and low-income countries.

Chronic disease prevention and management: With a growing global burden of conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, PHRI focuses on identifying risk factors and effective management strategies to prevent these diseases. Their research includes lifestyle interventions, medication trials, and policy recommendations to reduce the incidence of chronic diseases.

Infectious diseases: PHRI has an emerging role in the big three infectious diseases: HIV, TB, and malaria.

Innovative approaches in healthcare: PHRI is at the forefront of utilising technology, data science, and novel methodologies in clinical trials. Their research spans areas such as digital health, precision medicine, and the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare delivery.

Collaboration in REVIVE

Collaboration in REVIVE: PHRI contributes to trial design, data analysis, and robust research outcomes. Visit the official PHRI website for more information.

As a collaborating partner in the REVIVE clinical trial, PHRI brings its expertise in managing large-scale,
multi-centre clinical trials. With experience in trial design, data collection, and statistical analysis, PHRI’s role in the REVIVE trial helps to promote robust and reliable research outcomes. Their commitment to excellence and innovation in clinical research helps to shape the future of healthcare delivery.

PHRI collaborates with numerous stakeholders, including academic institutions, governments, and healthcare providers, as well as international and non-governmental organisations. These collaborations strengthen PHRI’s ability to influence health policy and implement health interventions on a global scale.

Training and education

Training and education

PHRI is committed to training the next generation of scientists and researchers. The institute offers fellowships and training programmes for researchers around the world, fostering a global community of experts dedicated to improving public health. Through these initiatives, PHRI contributes to capacity-building in health research, particularly in regions where resources are scarce.

University of Cape Town (UCT)

The REVIVE team within UCT’s Clinical Research Centre provides co-ordination as part of the REVIVE project office, working closely with the PHRI to drive site start up and recruitment.
